Born in the country market town of Briggs, Lincolnshire, on Oct. 28, 1929, in the less affluent north of England, Joan Ann Plowright was the daughter of a local newspaper editor and his homemaker wife, a gifted dabbler in amateur dramatics who encouraged her daughter to act
An English actress whose career spanned over six decades. She received several accolades including two Golden Globe Awards, an Olivier Award, and a Tony Award as well as nominations for an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award.
She was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004
and was married to Laurence Olivier for nearly three decades
